Golden Ray Puppets from Taiwan

Golden Ray puppets developed uniquely in Taiwan. It is a form of puppet theatre based on tradition, yet with limitless room for creative interpretation. It is a form of early post-modern theatre: mixing western and eastern influences, music, puppets and stage design into a new art form. There are several hundred Golden Ray glove puppet companies in Taiwan, their numbers far exceeding any other forms of performing arts companies.

       Glove puppet theatre in Europe



The glove puppet theatre has a long history in Europe. It was already a popular form of theatre in the late Middle Ages, spreading to every corner of the continent. The glove puppet theatre was performed for all classes of society, but always had a distinct anti-establishment character.
