Golden Rays Puppet Theatre
The Golden Rays glove puppet theatre was formerly considered
a vulgar form of art, while in fact it is one of the most representative
forms of the Taiwanese performing arts. Its music, stories,
stage and puppets are all an original Taiwanese creation. In
the late 1940s the Taiwanese entertainment market rapidly changed
with the influx of movies, cartoons, comic strips etc. These
new forms of entertainment were happily embrace by the people
and puppet theatre companies were quick to react with new creations.
Puppeteers Li Tianlu and Zhong Renbi experimented with modern
scripts created by the author Wu Tianlai. Mr. Zheng Wuxiong
was one of the first to start using outrageous light effects
and all types of recorded music. Still style soon caught on
all over Taiwan and at present 95% of all companies performs
Golden Ray puppet theatre. Huang Junxiong brought this type
of puppet theatre to television, where it became amazingly popular.
