Rod puppets from Guangdong
There were hundreds of rod puppet companies in Guangdong province
of southern China. There were some big companies with many performers
and musicians, but most companies consisted of one puppeteer
who plays the puppets, makes the voices and plays the simple
music that accompanies the performance. All puppets, props and
instruments are packed in one box, which serves as the seat
of the puppeteer during the performance. As the ways of entertainment
in the countryside become more diversified, there are fewer
possibilities to perform and many artist have to stop performing.
This is also the reason that this set from the 1980s ended up
in our museum.
